Phrasal verbs with out: removal, discovery, and completion

Understand out in phrasal verbs like find out, work out, fill out, run out, cut out, and point out.

Out often carries the idea of moving from hidden to visible, inside to outside, or available to finished.

That is why it appears in phrasal verbs about discovery, removal, distribution, and exhaustion.

Discovery and visibility

Find out, point out, work out, and figure out all involve making information clearer or more visible.

The answer was hidden, unclear, or unnoticed. After the action, it is out in the open.

Removal or exclusion

Cut out, leave out, cross out, and throw out all involve removing something from a group, text, place, or plan.

The particle out helps show that the object no longer belongs inside the original space.

Completion or exhaustion

Run out means none is left. Wear out means something becomes unusable through use. Fill out means complete a form.

In these verbs, out can mark reaching an endpoint.
